Competition between 5 invited participants: A sculpture for Papirbredden/Union Scene. Drammen, Norway 2007
(Photograph: winter 2007)

This former industrial site has  become the town´s most important cultural centre with libraries, study places, cafés and a multitude of culture activities: theatre, music, visual art.

Strong physical identifications are:

The river, the new pedestrian bridge and the square displaying both new and traditional architecture.

The jury asked for a sculpture which would help to unite the parts of the complex, and underline its significance in Drammen.

Commissioners:
Entra Eiendom AS
Buskerud fylkeskommune
Drammen Kommune
Union Eiendomsutvikling AS

The idea was not executed.

"Steget" - The Step:

The new bridge and the plaza brings about new traffic in many directions. The bridge is an important gate.
The sculpture is a clearly visible "city" sign, both nearby
and at a distance.

Two identical steel angles of triangular profile are composed in a way that makes them look very different as the viewpoint changes: they take on the shape of either an X or a Y. This respond to the many movements at the square and over the bridge.

The sculpture interplays in a lively way with the bridge construction and the buildings in shape, dimensions and colours.
A set of 4 bright colours should make it look big, however not heavy.
